Meet 2023 Global Outreach Fellow, Joshitha!
Dr. Joshitha Sankam is a Public Health Professional working in Climate Change and Health at the Divecha Centre for Climate Change at the Indian Institute of Science. Here, we get her take on the challenges and motivations that she has experienced while taking action for Planetary Health.
What Planetary Health projects are you working on right now?
JS: One aspect of my work involves sensitizing health professionals to the concept of Planetary Health. This refers to the interconnection between human health and the natural systems that support life on Earth. By increasing awareness of the importance of preserving these natural systems for human health, we can help health professionals to take a more holistic approach to patient care and advocacy with the goal of building capacity and enhancing local responses to climate change-related health issues.
Joshitha is working towards Health Sensitization with a focus on Nutrition, Coastal Health Risk (disaster response) and Urban Heat in a changing climate. She also works to raise awareness of the effects of climate change on human health among communities and health professionals.
What has encouraged you lately?
JS: It is encouraging to see the growing interest among young people, especially future doctors, in the field of Planetary Health during the events that we have organized. Many of them approach me with questions on how to get involved and make a positive contribution, which demonstrates their serious commitment to the cause. They are willing to step out of their comfort zone to make a difference in the field. This willingness to take action and make a positive contribution is essential to address the complex and urgent challenges posed by climate change. This is what we need, and that gives me a push!
“They are willing to step out of their comfort zone to make a difference in the field.”
What are the barriers you are facing or challenges you are finding?
JS: Identifying and engaging a larger audience interested in Planetary Health can be challenging, as many individuals are likely waiting for an opportunity but lack the proper channels to become involved.
What is a vision you have for the future?
JS: My vision for the future is to sensitize Planetary Health education in schools and colleges, regardless of the field of study, as this field requires a multi-sectoral approach to achieve its goals. It is not just one sector but all the sectors need to come together and play a role in addressing the challenges of Planetary Health. Collaboration and coordination among them are essential. (Also hoping it will be a part of the academic curricula in the future!)
